As a social scientist, Janet Stephenson is interested in the complex societal issues involved in transitioning to a sustainable future.
Janet is deeply engaged in research projects working with Māori communities that are leading innovative responses to climate change challenges. She also collaborates with councils, navigating the complexities of making inclusive decisions amidst climate uncertainties.
Her research spans various fronts, from tackling energy poverty to promoting sustainable transport and localising energy. In her recent book, "Culture and Sustainability," Janet distils over a decade of research into profound insights on how culture shapes sustainability transitions.
Before academia, Janet spent 15 years as a planner, much of it in the Far North, honing her understanding of the governance and delivery hurdles councils face in climate change adaptation.
